The Earth Cracked

I think the earth may have cracked somewhere deep beneath my home.  The bitter cold  makes the decks groan and bang that awful sound.  The dog jumps, and so do I.  “What will I find in the spring?” is my husband’s lament although I think he already knows.

I think, “I hope we find the good set of keys, with the automatic start button, I must have dropped in the snow.” It’s been a crazy week.

Last weekend was my birthday celebration that my children gave, which was wonderful.  It was a very special day, filled with smiles, food, laughter, children, all the things and people I love. I was on a good high for about a day or maybe two.  How lucky am I.

Then the heartache my eldest daughter is going through came to the surface of the conversation and what would plant itself back inside my brain. Sadly, it’s a situation that I cannot help.  They are being held hostage by their

Co-op.  They had finally sold it, after seven years.  It’s an upstairs Garden Apartment .  The complex  had been bought by developers years back and turned into “homes” of your own.  Although, as in their situation , not really.

You don’t own anything, you just pay the Management Company and a board makes all of the decisions .

In a nutshell, around Christmas they were up in an attic space, checking things out, and saw green mold all over the wood.  This is the first time they had ever seen it. But a week before when the heat had come on my daughter said the apartment felt like a sauna.  Thinking they should tell the Maintenance people, they did and  the “shit hit the fan” literally.  The finger was pointed at them.

The Management Company decided to go on a witch hunt and say that the mold came from the bathroom exhaust fan.  No Mold was found inside the fan.  The fan was there when they bought the Co-op, and it passed inspection.

The Co-op says that  doesn’t matter.  Two contractors that my daughter and her husband hired have looked at the place and said it’s the roof, the Co-op and their lawyer say it doesn’t matter, they are sticking with the fan. The fan  has since been removed for two month’s already, the attic has been remediated twice to remove the mold.  The people that are in now are still trying to dry the wood over two weeks.  Loud machines are going night and day and my five year old Grand daughter is trying to sleep on a couch because her room in under the attic and that has been sealed off.  I would like to know why the wood is wet , if it was the fan that has been out of the bathroom for two month’s.  The weather has been nothing but ice and snow, falling on a roof with no vents.  Another owner say’s she has mold in her attic too, but is afraid to say anything, even though it could help my daughter’s case.  They are not supposed to use the attics, everyone does though.   It’s all very strange.

The Lawyer, for the Co-OP will not let them close the deal with their buyer until they pay $10-15 thousand, (maybe more)they  don’t know the figure yet for the remediation.  They also want them to sign a paper saying they will not sue them afterwards.  Of course.

People are saying they will lose anyhow, the corporation that owns the Co-op and others like it are too big.  The Co-Op’s lawyer is out for blood. My daughter and her husband are beside themselves.  They are a couple in their 40’s, no  six figure salaries.  Musicians with “day-jobs”, finally having bought a nice place and their lives are “forever changed”

I am an honest person and have bought my children up to be the same.  My children have a band that writes and performs great songs about peace and love and compassion.  Not one of us can wrap our head around why this is happening and or how to deal with it.

I am afraid for the outcome but I won’t speak of it, I am trying my best to tap into source and believe that there will be good.  That good will triumph over evil.  That the truth will come out, that the movie will have a happy ending;

Because the corporation became honest right at the last moment and realized that with all their millions and insurance policies they could easily pay for the removal of the mold and they would let this nice couple close on their old place, and move into their new one and then everyone would all live happily ever after……..

“you may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one……”
