Almost Cut My Hair

I loved having long hair down my back, in my younger days I had it a dark auburn, one guy said it was like an Irish setter. I took that as a compliment.  It kept me warm,a protective veil i could feel bounce when I rode horses or teased a man with when I was riding high.My Mom and Dad went on a trip when i was twenty two, I thought I’d surprise dad and look more “grown up” when they returned so I cut my hair, only to my shoulder I think, but that was a big deal since it hung to my backside.  On the way home from their trip my dad had a heart attack on the train.  They took him to the hospital and my mom said she never thought he’d not be ok, but he died. That was in 1972.  From then on I have kept my hair fairly long, is it superstition, I don’t know.  I had forgotten about this memory until recently as thoughts of my Dad have been looming in bits and pieces of my mind.  I was jolted too seeing a picture from 1974 with me and my very long hair again.  Guess I grew it back right away afraid of who else might leave me. Sharing this pic with my WP friends. Anyone else out there have thoughts on hair??

It grew down there

my hair is me I am my hair

it once grew all the way down there

so many shades it’s come to be

not sure which one is really me

grey’s a possibility

especially at 63

  1. wow. i can understand why you would be hesitant to cut it. i’ve cut my long hair a couple times, but even though i’ve liked the change, i must say i don’t feel quite like ‘me’ without it. is it attachment, or just knowing what i like and sticking with it? hmm…for now i am ok to leave things as is. 😉

  2. sounds like the best idea 😉

  3. Samson. Rapunzel. Various indigenious peoples. Lots of traditions have hair related legends and myths and symbolic styling or like the Roman Legion … practical.
